The main gateway to Boston and New England is Boston Logan International Airport. You can reach downtown Boston in only a few minutes, taking a taxi or driving a rented car. However, traveling by taxi can be a bit more expensive than in other cities, meaning a cost of about $25.
Because of the crowded Logan, there are also other 2 regional airports that you might want to choose as a second option. These are Manchester-Boston Regional Airport and T.F. Green Airport. The first one is located at about a 50-mile distance from Boston and the second one is in the south of the city, at approximately 60 miles.
How to get to Boston TD Garden :
FROM LOGAN AIRPORT: Exit the airport and follow the signs to the Sumner Tunnel (Toll Tunnel) toward Boston. Once through the tunnel, stay in the right lane and take the ramp marked Storrow Dr/Cambridge. Once on the ramp, follow signs for North Station.
GETTING AROUND BOSTON
Public transportation in Boston is operated by Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA, the fourth largest transit system in the United States), which is simply known by the city's inhabitants as the "T". The system offers bus, subway, commuter rail and water shuttles. It is affordable, comfortable and it will take you anywhere you want inside and around Boston. If you use MBTA system, you will need a CharlieCard or a CharlieTicket, available with cash, credit cards, and debit cards at the machines in all stations. Also in all stations, you will find full-color T maps, very useful for tourists, but also locals.
Taking the subway
The subway system consists of four color-coded rail lines: the Red and Orange lines, that usually link the north to the south and the Blue and Green lines, which travel from the east to the west. Besides the four lines, there is also a fifth one, the Silver Line, that officially is part of the subway system, but considered by the locals as part of the bus system. Running hours: 5:00 a.m. - midnight.
Taking the bus
There are two types of bus services in Boston: the regular bus and the express bus, which is more expensive, but also much faster than the regular service. Depending on the ticket type you purchased, you will pay around $1.50 for regular buses and about $5 for rapid transit.
Taking the water shuttle
If you visit Boston, then you should take a trip between Long Wharf and Navy Yard, because it is a good opportunity to get a view on the USS Constitution Museum, Faneuil Hall and New England Aquarium. A trip will cost you around $1.70.
Taking the commuter rail
This service of the MBTA system is mainly addressed to people who travel outside Boston. It is not as accessible as the subway, because of its limited frequency, and a one-way trip can cost you even $7.75.
Traveling by car inside Boston is not such a good idea, especially in downtown Boston, because of the crowded traffic. Also, other reasons are the excellent public transportation and the walking facilities provided by the city. Moreover, parking can be quite expensive, you will need to pay even $40/day in downtown Boston.
Walking inside Boston is an excellent way of visiting most of the city's top tourist attractions. Other healthy way of getting around Boston, is by bicycle, but be aware that riding on sidewalks in the city is not recommended, and in Cambridge it is even illegal.
